Adding Time Quickly!

Here is a very useful hack to add hours and minutes together:
Let's try adding 2 hours and 44 minutes with 2 hours and 25 minutes.

Step 1:

First, lets put the hours and minutes together so that they form a number. We will get 244 and 255

Step 2:

Now using the addition hack you learnt earlier add  244 to 225
244 + 225 = 469

Step 3:

Now add 40 (this is a fixed addition step) to 469 to give you 509 (This is a compulsory step to be done so for all addition of time.)

Since hour is always in single digit and minutes in double-digit, you should write your answer, which is 509, in the same way (509 = 5 + 09).
Thus, the answer is 5 hours and 09 minutes.

Share this trick with your friends and have fun adding time quickly!

4 things you should consider before hiring a tutor

4 things you should consider before hiring a tutor

1) Budget – We need to be realistic as we have our finances to manage but we also need to provide our best possible.

2) Proximity – Best situation is to have the tutor come to your house to save your time. Why do you want to pay more and spend more time to bring your child to a different venue?

3) Suitable tutor – You need to hire a tutor who is able to help your child at their level. E.g. hiring an MOE teacher with a vast number of experience to teach your child basic mathematics might cause a burn in your pocket. It is important to find the suitable tutor to teach your child at his or her competency level and change the tutor when necessary to improve the competency.

4) Communication – This is the most important point in hiring a tutor. It is very important to communicate with the tutor prior to hiring the tutor. This will give you an understanding of the tutor’s competency and how the tutor (strategies) will be able to help your child.

Do mental subtraction quickly!

When subtracting, we want to avoid the carrying over of numbers so that we can solve it mentally. Try it with your tuition teacher.

We are going to use the same trick that we used for solving addition problems and subtract from left to right.
E.g)    664  - 453

Step 1: Group the numbers into hundreds, tens, and ones
i.e. 664 (600 + 60 + 4) – 453 (400 + 50 +3)

Step 2: Going from left to right, subtract the hundreds
             600 – 400 = 200

Step 3: Now subtract the tens
            60 – 50 = 10

Step 4: Now subtract the ones
            4 – 3 = 1

Step 5:  Now add all your answers together
             200 + 10 + 1 =  211

How to do addition quickly?

The trick is to add from left to right, rather than the conventional right to left. Try this with your tutor.
We can do this by adding the tens first and then adding the ones.

e.g. 45 + 34

Step 1: Group the numbers into tens and ones i.e. 45 (40 + 5) +34 (30 + 4)
Step 2: Add the tens i.e. 40 + 30 = 70
Step 3: Add the ones i.e.  5 + 4 = 9

Step 4: Add both your answers i.e. 70 + 9 = 79

Now to deal with carrying over numbers which are above 10.

Step 1: Group the numbers into tens and ones i.e. 46 (40 + 6) +35 (30 + 5)
Step 2: Add the tens i.e. 40 + 30 = 70
Step 3: Add the ones i.e.  6 + 5 = 11
Step 4: Add both your answers i.e. 70 + 11 = 81
